Historical Minutes

In 2025, our centenary year, the band was gifted two minute books dating from our earliest days. These books were kept as a record of meetings held by the committee, and we have digitised their notes as accurately as possible here for you to enjoy. Many thanks to the daughter of John and Winnie Brannan for the kind donation.

 Committee Meeting held 12th Feb 1939 10.A.M.

Those present were :- Chairman – J. L. Sanderson

Messrs J. Coleman, D. Johnson, W. Crawford, R. Simpson, W. Thompson & part of the band members.

This meeting was posted as the Annual Meeting & posters were put up to that effect, also postcards were sent to all committee men & trustees to attend same. The sec, Mr Barron did not appear although we waited until 12 noon. It was resolved to hold a meeting of the committee. The Chairman explained to the Band-master why the Annual meeting could not take place as there was no Sec & no books. Sec had been informed of the meeting. Mr Colman stated that he had a meeting at Ashington & that he would try & get back with the 11.30 AM Bus. The band members took up an undignified attitude & said they were going to hand their instruments in as they were “sick” of it. The meeting was then proceeded with.

The chairman was asked to take the note of meeting in absence of Mr Barron. It was stated by the treasurer that the Secretary had no correspondence in his book as from May 1938. The Sec had asked him for a copy from his (the treasurers) books so as to make his books with the others. He had never appeared at the practices & did not know whether there was any business to transact, therefore the Treasurer contended that the sec had no right to copy his books & refused him. After a lengthy discussion on the subject, it was decided that a deputation visit Mr Barron, consisting of Chairman, Treas, & Mr Thompson. This was moved by W. Crawford & seconded by Mr Simpson. It was moved that the Sec have his books made up to May 1938 (his last entry) then he would have to stand by the Treasurer’s books. Moved Mr Simpson, Seconded J. Coleman. The deputation went straight to Mr Barron & he fixed a suitable date to go through the books after they told him why they were there. Mr Thompson was unable to attend at the date fixed which left the Chairman & Treasurer present. The Secretary got the details for the whole year. The present Balance Sheets were made out & passed on to the Treasurer afterwards.
