Missing Cash

The financial secretary cannot account for £10 which should have been paid into the Midland Bank.

Mr Johnson financial secretary again came under discussion. The committee were far from satisfied at the repeated failure on his part to hand over books for examination, the delay preventing the committee from progressing with the band business. Mr Turnbull moved that the secretary write to Mr Johnson & ask him to produce all books & cash in hand & attend personally a meeting to be held in the band room on Saturday May 13th at 5-0 PM. This was agreed to.

It was also decided that the motion put forward at the previous meeting – Re (that the Secretary should write to Midland Bank & Cooperative Society for a statement of accounts) should be left in abeyance for the time being.

Mr W Thompson Correspondence Secretary asked for Mr J Gillis to be elected Assistant Secretary – all agreed.

The conductor Mr R Routledge next came in for discussion which took up a good deal of time. After much reasoning in which it was quite evident that the meeting was not progressing, Mr Turnbull moved that we accept the president’s offer, that he (Mr Davison) draft a circular to all players interested with a view of reorganising the band; also that we obtain the players opinion whether a change of conductor would be beneficial to the band – this would give the present conductor a fair deal – all agreed.

Two members, Mr Thompson & Mr Jarvie were elected to draw up a list of bandsmans names & present same at the next meeting.

This concluded the meeting.

The balance sheet again came in for consideration. Mr Ball chairman said that the £10 entered on the balance sheet had not been paid into the Midland Bank, also Mr Johnson could not produce the cash in hand. This led to lengthy discussion. It was decided that Mr Johnson should be dismissed from the position of Financial Secretary & to have no more responsibility. Mr J. Jarvie was elected in his place. Mr Johnson then arrived with the books which were gone through & checked.

It was agreed that Mr Ball should take books & audit same up to date & Mr Johnson to sign his name as a witness. Mr Johnson promised to refund the money in a certain time & it was decided that he sign a letter to this affect. Mr Little then moved we open a local Bank account. It was arranged that 3 members, Mr Ball, Mr Gillis & Mr Jarvie should go to the cooperative society & carry this out. The Secretary was asked to write to Midland Bank & Co-operative Society for a Statement of Accounts which was left in abeyance from previous meeting.

A place was selected for members to sign their names to a form from the Midland Bank asking for specimen signatures.

The minutes of the last meeting were read & adopted moved by Mr Turnbull & Mr Crawford.

In regard to the opening of a local Banking Account Mr Ball said this had been done & that the band had now become a member of the Co-operative Society & would be entitled to all benefits derived from further purchases.

It was decided that we give Mr Johnson 6 months to refund money owing to the band. This was moved by Mr Turnbull, sec – J Baker. Mr Turnbull suggested that a committee meeting will be called for the purpose of squaring up the books with Mr Johnson & other matters concerning the band. This was agreed to.

Correspondence

A letter was read from the Lynemouth Children's Gala committee asking for the band services at their sports, this was accepted. Moved by Mr Turnbull – 2nd Mr Crawford.

In answer to a letter from the Ashington Children's Sports committee asking for band services to play the procession from the school to the park it was decided we go. Moved Mr Ball seconded Mr Turnbull.

Correspondence was read from the Midland Bank Ltd. It was resolved that the Lynemouth & Ellington Silver Band continue an account with the above & a form was signed to this effect by Mr W Ball – W Thompson – J Jarvie - & J Gillis. Mr Turnbull then gave an account of a meeting held by the Ashington Group Miners’ Federation & stated that the band had been re engaged to play at the annual Miners’ picnic. He also appealed for the bandsmen to pull together & make this a great success.

It was decided that we have two practices weekly – Moved & seconded Mr Ball – Mr Turnbull. Mr Turnbull suggested we arrange concerts etc to obtain funds for the band & that a entertainments committee be set up for this purpose. The members chosen were – J Jarvie – J Baker – W Thompson - & J Gillis.
