New Players

Two new players join the band.

Committee Meeting Held June 20th 1939

Members Present were – W Thompson – J Jarvie – J Gillis – W Brown – J Warlow – G Turnbull

Mr J Baker took the chair in place of Mr Ball.

The meeting was moved open by J. Gillis

The minutes were read by the secretary. Mr G Turnbull moved the adoption.

Mr Wallace Robinson made an application to become a member of the band – It was moved by Mr Turnbull that we accept him – All agreed. Mr H Chapman was also accepted as a member.

A letter was read from Woods – Newcastle (Re – standing account for instrument repairs) It was agreed that the financial secretary should write & explain the situation the band was in at the present moment regarding the reorganising of the band – also that this account would be paid as soon as possible.

A letter was read from the Midland Bank Ltd (Re – Statement of accounts). This was accepted.

In connection with the Lynemouth Children's Gala it was agreed that the Gala committee should provide teas for 25 bandsmen.

In the event of Mr Johnson failing to meet his account weekly or paying through a third party it was moved by Mr Turnbull that the financial secretary should report at the next meeting. This was decided on.

The rules of the Picnic Band Contest were read & accepted.

The secretary reported he had written to R Rutherford of Morpeth but he could not give his services as he was already engaged by another band for the Picnic.

Durham Miners Gala

          An advert was read from the Sacriston Witton Lodge & it was agreed that we tender £15 for the occasion.

Committee Meeting June 27th 1939

Members present were – W Thompson, J Jarvie, J Gillis, J Warlow & Mr Smith

The meeting was moved open by the chairman, seconded by J. Gillis

The minutes of the last meeting were read & accepted.

A letter was read from the Lynemouth British Legion asking for the band services at their annual Drum Head Service to be held on Aug 6th 1939. It was decided that the band should attend.

In regard to Mr D Johnson failing to stand by his agreement it was decided that the chairman should write & ask him for an explanation.

It was agreed that the band should give a programme at the Plough Ellington Village to help to meet expenses for the picnic.

Committee Meeting           July 12th 1939

Members present were W Thompson, J Jarvie, J Gillis, J Baker, W Crawford, W Little

The meeting was moved open by W Crawford.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read & their adoption was moved by Mr W Little.

Regarding the programme of music at the Plough Inn, Ellington Village – this was cancelled owing to not being able to fix a band for the occasion.

Letters were read from Witton Lodge, Sacriston & Geo R & F Longstaff Radcliff, these were accepted. A letter was also read from the Ashington Miners Federation regarding the Morpeth Picnic arrangements – this was also accepted.

Durham Miners Gala

          It was agreed that of the £15 received for this engagement £2 should go towards the band funds & after deducting Bus fares & fees for hired players the rest should be equally divided amongst the players – It was moved by W Little that anyone claiming extra payment should come before the committee & that extra seats on the bus should be payed for by the additional passengers – All agreed.

The chairman Mr Ball reported that Mr Storey on behalf of the Ashington Coal Co had been making enquiries about the welfare of the band & that nothing had been heard of lately about the payments of instruments received through them & that they wanted to know something definite about the future existence of the band. Mr Ball then read a copy of a letter he had sent to Mr Storey stating the position of the band since the beginning of the present committee taking over also that a levy from the Lynemouth Colliery had been successful. This was accepted by the rest of the committee.

The secretary reported that Mr Corbet was asking for 12/6 as fee for the Morpeth Picnic. It was decided that we leave it to the conductor whether we play him or not – also it was decided to meet the conductor regarding players for the Picnic
