New Conductor

A ballot is held to decide whether a change of conductor is needed. A new conductor is appointed.

Circulars to Bandsmen – These were drafted by the President Mr Davison with a view of reorganising the band, in which he appealed to all bandsmen to make a real effort to put the band on a sound Basis. It was agreed that the members chosen for the entertainment committee should deliver these, also a special practice would be held on Sunday 4th June & a ballot would be taken by all present regarding a change of conductor.

A letter was read from the Ashington Welfare asking for the band services at their sports. Moved by J Baker that we go – all agreed.

A letter was also read from the Co-operative Society Re – Statement of Accounts.

Mr J Jarvie then brought the conductor on the board. It was decided we leave the matter over till the Sunday morning special practice.

The chairman was asked to write to Mr G Knight regarding the uniform belonging to the band.

It was decided to arrange a meeting on Tuesday 6th June and ask Mr D Johnson to be present, the purpose being to square up books & any other business concerning the band.

The chairman moved the meeting open – 2nd J. Gillis

The minutes of the previous meeting were read.

Mr Ball said he had written to G. Knight (Re uniform belonging to Band) but up to the present there was no reply.

Ashington Welfare Sports

In view of the band being short of players the secretary was asked to write to J Bailey, R Rutherford & G Gillon for their services for that day.

The secretary was also asked to write to Mr R. S. Davison & apologise for the misunderstanding on the part of the late conductor who had promised to help the Harmonic band as regards players, which could not be done because the Lynemouth band was engaged also.

Picnic Band Contest

          3 members W Thompson, J. Jarvie, J. Baker were asked to produce a list of players for this occasion.

Mr Routledge having resigned his position as conductor of the band, it was moved by J Jarvie & agreed that we asked Mr R Lowdon to take the band leader’s place until the Picnic was over. The Chairman Mr Ball agreed to approach Mr Lowdon on the matter. W Thompson secretary said we had not received any entry forms or rules for the contest. Mr Turnbull promised to make enquiries about same.

Mr D Johnson arrived without the band books. After answering various questions he added his signature to the financial secretary’s book. It was decided to go through Mr Johnson’s books etc at a later date. Having been told that he had six months to refund money owing to the band, he was asked to pay a weekly sum to Mr J Jarvie & also sign a letter to this effect.

Regarding Mr A Clyde’s account it was decided to bring him before the committee.

Committee Meeting June 13th 1939

The minutes of the previous meeting were read & confirmed

The picnic band contest came under discussion. The Secretary presented a list of players names suitable for this occasion & it was left to the sub committee to choose the best band possible.

It was decided that the band should play through Lynemouth before leaving for Ashington on Sat – first to play Children’s procession to the Park. Also Ashington Welfare Sports.

The secretary was asked to write to R Rutherford & engage him for the picnic.

W Thompson secretary was also asked to arrange for the return of all band property such as uniforms – instruments – music etc which had not been retrieved from late band members.

It was decided that all present players without uniforms should be fixed up at once.

Repairs of band instruments for the picnic. This was left in the secretary’s hands.

The question of T Crawford leaving the band & R McPherson taking bass trombone to camp without permission were left over for the time being.
